If the entire root system has already become mushy, it is too late to save the plant. However, if some healthy, white, firm roots exist, try to bring the plant back to good health by replanting in fresh soil with good drainage. Root rot is a condition that, if left untreated, will eliminate plants.

Will root rot go away by itself?

Prolonged root rot may lead to death of the plant. In extreme cases, plants affected by root rot may die within 10 days. Root rot is usually lethal although it is treatable. An affected plant will not normally survive, but may potentially be propagated.

For plants with root rot or fungal infections, use 1 tablespoon (15 mL.) per cup of water. The solution can be made up and stored for future use, but be sure to store it in a cool, dark place as exposure to light diminishes the potency.
