How to do needle felting
How do you start needle felting?
In this tutorial, we’re needle felting a small ball.
- Prep Your Wool. If you’re using roving, you can just tear a piece of it off.
- Roll Your Roving Into a Ball. Make sure you tuck the ends in if you can.
- Poke the Ball. Start by placing the ball on top of your felting surface.
- Keep Going Until the Wool Felts.
Is needle felting hard to learn?

You can continue to progress with the smaller projects that don’t require armature or any more of the complex abilities or you can slowly progress and learn new techniques until you can do the more complex needle felting creations.
How easy is needle felting?
The great thing about felting, whether it be wet or needle felted is that it’s an easy craft and you don’t need a long or expensive list of equipment. As with any craft there are essential tools but the most impressive tool will be your own imagination.
Can you make a felting needle?
You can‘t use a regular sewing needle for needle felting. Felting needles are specialized tools adapted from those used in industrial felting machines. They are designed to matt and lock fibers together, transforming loose wool batting or roving into felt fabric or sculptural objects.
Is needle felting expensive?
Needle felting can be as cheap as expensive as you want it to be depending on how much you do and how big your projects are and how complex they are. Also, the wool you buy places a large part in the overall cost.
Can you felt without a felting needle?
Without a felting needle, you cannot needle felt. Single felting needles form the basis for a felting pen, which is essentially a device that holds one or more felting needles. Felting needles are different from regular sewing needles. Felting needles have tiny barbs or sharp hooks on the end.

But if you are careful and learn how to use the needles correctly, a felting needle can last for months or even years with regular use and you can avoid painful puncture wounds. Yes, you can wash your needle felting sculptures and other items. However, there are some issues to think about before you decide to do that as you may find that there is a possibility that you damage your felted piece.
What is the difference between wet felting and needle felting?
The main difference between wet and needle felting is that wet felting uses hot water, soap, and manual agitation to mesh the fibers into felt, and needle felting uses the up and down motion of a needle felting tool to create the necessary friction to form felt.
Can you wet felt after needle felting?

Wet felting can be used to close up holes left behind after needle felting, a problem that can be especially unsightly if a larger needle was used. Wet felting can effectively smooth a needle felted piece, giving it a nice, finished appearance.
