Alele-Williams was born in the Delta state city of Warri. She went to Government School in Warri, Queen’s College in Lagos, and Ibadan University.

She earned a master’s degree in mathematics while teaching at Queen’s School in Ede, Osun State, in 1957, and a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Chicago (US) in 1963, making her the first woman to accomplish so in Nigeria.

Before joining the University of Lagos in 1965, she went to Nigeria for a few years of postdoctoral work at the University of Ibadan.


She began her teaching career as a mathematics teacher at Queen’s School in Ede, Osun State, from 1954 to 1957. She moved to Vermont to work as a graduate assistant and eventually as an assistant professor.

Alele-Williams worked as a postdoctoral research member at the University of Ibadan’s department of education from 1963 to 1965, after which she was assigned a professor of mathematics at the University of Lagos in 1976.

In 1985, Alele-Williams became the first female vice-chancellor of a Nigerian university, the University of Benin, and she believes her tenure there, which ended in 1992, was a test case for demonstrating a woman’s executive capabilities.

Fellow of the Nigerian Mathematical Association, member of the Nigerian Academy of Education, merit award of Bendel State in Nigeria, and regional vice-president of the Third World Organization for Women in Science for Africa are among her awards.

Professor Alele-Williams also served as the chairman of the African Mathematical Union’s Commission for Women in Mathematics.

She has held and served in a number of positions. Alele-Williams had made valuable contributions to the advancement of education in Nigeria by sitting on numerous committees and boards.

Alele was the chairman of the curriculum revision committee at Bendel State University from 1973 until 1979. She was the chairman of the Lagos State Curriculum Review Committee and the Lagos State Examinations Boards from 1979 to 1985.

Not shortly after returning to Nigeria from the United States, Alele-Williams married Babatunde Abraham Williams. Williams was a political scientist and a senior lecturer at Osun State University back then. Currently, Alele-Williams has five children and 10 grandchildren.
