Dave Campo was born in Groton, Connecticut in July 1947.
As a player he was a defensive back who played at Central Connecticut. Campo started his coaching career with Central Connecticut as an assistant from 1971 to 1972. He was an assistant coach at Albany in 1973, Bridgeport in 1974, and Pittsburgh in 1975.
Campo became a defensive backs coach at Washington State in 1976 and at Boise State from 1977 to 1979. He worked as an assistant coach at Oregon State in 1980 and Weber State from 1981 to 1982. He was a DB coach at Iowa State in 1983 and at Syracuse from 1984 to 1986 as well as for Miami from 1987 to 1988.
Campo got his first NFL job as a defensive assistant for the Dallas Cowboys from 1989 to 1990. He worked his way up to defensive backs coach and then defensive coordinator from 1995 to 1999. Campo served as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 2000 to 2002.
He then became the defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns from 2003 to 2004 and coached for the Jacksonville Jaguars as a DB coach from 2005 to 2007. He returned to the Dallas Cowboys as DB coach from 2008 to 2011. Campo has served as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Kansas since 2012.
