ASUU Strike to be Suspended as FG begin payment of withheld salaries of Striking Lecturers

The Nigerian Academic Staff Union of Universities moments ago via its official Twitter handle announced that they would be suspending their 10-months old strike very soon.

The reason for the suspension which would soon be announced before the year closes is as a result of the Federal government bowing to the pressure mounted on them by ASUU who two weeks ago told the Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige that they would not be calling off the strike until outstanding withheld salaries were paid.

According to ASUU’s Twitter post, the Federal government has already commenced the payment of lecturers’ salaries that were withheld.

Recall that the ASUU strike started 10-months ago around March this year and many Nigerian students’ lives, academics, and careers have been hanging in the balance.

From the looks of things, when this whole strike finally gets called off, an entire educational calendar year might have to be repeated all over again which technically adds an extra one year to every undergraduate student.
